Megadoor proudly provided the hangar doors for the new 120,000 sq ft (11 150

nnnn

sqm) Florida State College at Jacksonville's Aircraft Services Facility.

nnnn

The three-bay hangar with adjoining

nnnn

classroom space is jointly owned and

nnnn

operated by Florida State College

nnnn

at Jacksonville (FSCJ) and Jacksonville

nnnn

Aviation Authority (JAA). Flightstar Aircraft

nnnn

Services, an aviation MRO provider, leases

nnnn

approximately 95% of the facility.

nnnn

Pond & Company was commissioned by

nnnn

FSCJ to design the facility and prepare

nnnn

a Design-Build Request for Proposal for

nnnn

the new Si4.6 million Aircraft Coating

nnnn

Education Facility. One of the initial

nnnn

challenges was to design a cost effective

nnnn

three-bay hangar. Originally, bottom

nnnn

rolling doors were considered, but the

nnnn

additional side room required forthe door

nnnn

pockets significantly increased the building

nnnn

cost. Consideration was given to eliminating

nnnn

the door pockets and rolling the hangar

nnnn

doors that needed to be opened in front

nnnn

of the adjacent hangar bay. However, this

nnnn

facility would have multiple tenants and it

nnnn

was not reasonable to allow one tenant's

nnnn

operations to be affected every time an

nnnn

adjacent bay had to be opened. We were

nnnn

consulted about these issues and were

nnnn

able to present the Pond team with the

nnnn

vertical lifting Megadoor solution, which

nnnn

would elegantly eliminate the need for

nnnn

door pockets, allowing for a compact, cost

nnnn

effective design. The Megadoor design

nnnn

would also allow all three hangar bays to be

nnnn

opened without affecting the adjacent bay.

nnnn

After these concerns were addressed, the

nnnn

team's attention turned to the Coating

nnnn

Bay. A low air infiltration door system is

nnnn

critical to ensuring a high quality paint

nnnn

job and minimizing the size of the air

nnnn

handlers and filtration needed to meet EPA

nnnn

regulations. After reviewing in detail the

nnnn

unique double side seals of the Megadoor,

nnnn

and comparing expected air infiltration

nnnn

to traditional bottom rolling doors, the

nnnn

Megadoor systems were specified for the

nnnn

entire project.

After competing against five teams, Dana B

nnnn

Kenyon was awarded the project. "Basically,

nnnn

what we did was we teamed early on with

nnnn

our subcontractors and the design team of

nnnn

RS&H duringthe bidding processto getthe

nnnn

most competitive design/build package,"

nnnn

manager. "We also conferred with Nucor

Building Systems on the pre-engineered

nnnn

metal building system and Megadoor for

nnnn

the hangar doors that would be used for

nnnn

the facility. We had early design meetings

nnnn

with them, even before we got the job,

nnnn
