Auburn University gains larger doors on smaller space

The Auburn University Regional Airport (AUO)

nnnn

is a public use facility serving the local community

nnnn

that is owned and maintained by Auburn Universi-

nnnn

ty. In 2010, a new terminal building was built along

nnnn

with a new hangar for University aircraft as part of

nnnn

a modernization and growth plan. These improve-

nnnn

ments will help the airport provide better service to

nnnn

the large crowds of people who fly in to attend col-

nnnn

lege football games at Auburn University and serve

nnnn

as an economic tool to help advance the region.

nnnn

The Auburn University hangar is located ad-

nnnn

jacent to the new terminal building and is the first

nnnn

of four hangars to be built, side by side, on a new

nnnn

ramp. Originally, the corporate style hangar was de-

nnnn

signed with a 90' wide, bottom rolling door that

nnnn

stacked into a 15' wide door pocket inside the hang-

nnnn

ar. However, the University, with the future in

nnnn

mind, wanted a wider door, able to accommodate

nnnn

larger business jets. A no' wide door would provide

nnnn

the flexibility of housing the largest visiting aircraft,

nnnn

potential fleet upgrades, and more value should the

nnnn

University decide to sell or sub-lease the hangar.

nnnn

Since site constraints limited the building width,

nnnn

a wider bottom rolling doorwas not feasible. Dye

nnnn

Aviation, the aviation consultant on the project,

nnnn

recommended that the architect and University in-

nnnn

vestigate using a vertically lifting fabric door from

nnnn

Megadoor to solve this issue. The group travelled to

nnnn

Megadoor's headquarters and manufacturing facil-

nnnn

ity in Peachtree City, GA, about 90 minutes from

nnnn

the Auburn Airport to learn more about the door

nnnn

and organization. During the visit, the group met

nnnn

with Megadoor management, inspected the man-

nnnn

ufacturing facility and reviewed a local hangar

nnnn

door installation. The trip provided the group with

nnnn

the confidence to select a vertical fabric door from

nnnn

Megadoor for their new hangar.
