M22520/1 Eagle Family of Intelligent Ethernet MACs with SerDes
> Product Overview
Multi-Port 10/100/1000 Ethernet MAC with Multi-Protocol Congestion Management
The Eagle Ethernet MAC product family consists of two devices, the M22520 and M22521. The Eagle products are
multi-port 10/100/1000 Mbps intelligent Ethernet MACs with embedded serial line interfaces (SerDes and SGMII) and
SPI-4.2 system side interface. M22521 is a 12-port device and M22520 is a 24-port device. Eagle products also include
intelligent traffic classification and multiprotocol congestion management. Eagle devices are specifically targeted for
10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet aggregation applications in Ethernet switching, routing, Ethernet over SONET, security
appliances and storage networks.
Product Brief
®
Today’s Gigabit Ethernet network connections, on average, operate at a fraction of available bandwidth. However,
equipment that aggregates Ethernet links, such as switches and routers, is designed for continuous full link utilization.
This disparity results in increased equipment costs and reduced number of customers served per system. To maximize
revenue per system, a statistically multiplexed solution must be used.
Eagle delivers intelligent statistical multiplexing for Ethernet networks. A sophisticated classification algorithm, along
with WRED and MDRR based oversubscription algorithms, prioritizes traffic based on VLAN, MPLS, MAC address and
type of service. This results in high priority traffic always getting through to packet processors. In addition, Eagle
intelligently handles lower priority traffic when there is traffic congestion. The resulting system-level solution reduces
per port hardware costs over 50%.
Features
Benefits
>
On-chip triple-speed Ethernet MACs: M22520 – 24 x
10/100/1000 MACs; M22521 – 12 x 10/100/1000 MACs
Enables development of a single hardware solution for multiple
Ethernet speeds.
Reduces component count for high port count applications.
>
Non-blocking, single stage, industry-leading oversubscription
Reduces equipment cost per user by leveraging system resources
across more customers
>
Up to 96 ingress priority queues, four queues per port, and
support for eight incoming class of service (CoS) levels
Multiple classes of service and very low latency enable the support of
loss-less control plane traffic, video, voice over IP, and differentiated
data services.
>
Integrated SGMII interfaces for direct connection to optics,
copper PHYs and GE serial backplanes
Enables support of both copper and fiber applications with proven, low
cost PHYs, low cost RJ-45 copper connectors or SFP copper and fiber
connectors. Integrated Serdes eliminates need for external PHYs.
>
SPI-4.2 system side interface with full-speed, half-speed,
and quarter-speed support
Facilitates interfacing to off-the-shelf network processors and
switches. Half-speed and quarter-speed support enables applications
with lower cost 5 Gbps and 2.5 Gbps NPUs.
>
24 SPI channels with reduced SPI channel funnel and packet
modes
Facilitates glueless interfacing to NPUs supporting 25 or less channels
on the SPI interface
>
Egress Broadcast and multicast support
Ideal for video distribution applications
>
1:N redundancy and Ethernet Managed Link support
Facilitates deployment in redundancy protected applications
>
Line rate packet classification and filtering with rate limiting
Offloads NPU and enables intelligent oversubscription processing that
ensures high priority data is always forwarded to the NPU.
>
384KB ECC protected on-chip, integrated packet memory
packet memory in each direction for ingress and egress
traffic
No need for external RAM components reducing overall system footprint, power and cost
>
Support for jumbo frames of up to 9.6 KB and loss-less flow
control with fiber latency of up to 10KM (one way)
Ensures compliance with network requirements for frame size and link
reach
