Example of SOLEX application - n° 2
Dimensional control of gun barrels
Objective
To be able to obtain an accurate dimensional
control of complex difficult-to-access parts such as
gun barrels.
Main components
SOLEX pneumatic micro-measuring systems
Dedicated air gauge
Advantages
A SOLEX pneumatic micro-measuring system fitted
with an air gauge within a sleeve sliding into the
gun barrel gives a reliable, repeatable and rapid
inspection reading with an accuracy in the order of
microns

Application
The gun barrel is one of the key elements in a firing piece since it launches the projectiles.
There are both smooth and rifled gun barrels. In the latter, the rifling on the inside of the
barrel reduces the final projectile speed but increases the accuracy of aim.
This complex geometry along with the obvious difficulties of access to the inside of the
machine part makes its dimensional control very critical.
The SOLEX pneumatic micro-measuring system principle rests on taking a direct reading of
the fall or rise in pressure following any variation in a flow of air through an orifice.
An air gauge specific to this application is shown in figure 2. It slides inside the barrel using a
guide piece in one of the rifling grooves.
The plug gaugeis marked at several points to indicate how far the assembly has entered into
the barrel.
