One of the unenviable challenges that has always concerned the
design engineer is reducing the weight of the vessel. They must do
this without compromising any aspects of it’s performance.
This reduction in weight will give the key benefit of increased load i.e.
cargo, people/customers/personnel or vital equipment.
Plastic valves offer a massive reduction in weight in comparison
to traditional metallic valves. In some cases as much as 75%.

They used the 2” flanged compact valve (< 2.5kg) on black & grey water systems for the new Naval- Type 45. They
came to SAFi requesting an alternative
to cast iron, which had previously been
used on Landing Craft Units (LCU).

Marine applications are well know as one of the harshest environments for
any material. Salt, present in both the atmosphere and water is highly corrosive to most metals. Normal practice of special coatings and expensive
materials such as stainless steel are not always the
best answer.
Glass Reinforced Polypropylene (GRPP) is recognized as one of the most
mechanically robust and corrosion resistant plastics available. GRPP gives
excellent corrosion resistance to marine environments, it’s carbon black
ensures protection from UV light and it’s glass fibre gives good mechanical
strength.
As no corrosion will ever be present in a plastic valve then there is
another benefit - EASY MAINTENANCE
