Waste Water Application Data No. 71 05/98 iaorxicouiuuycvviuiiviuiiumu Monoflo Pumps Industrial E Range and Widethroat W Range progressing cavity pumps are playing a key role within the sludge thickening plant at Severn Trent Water's second largest sewage treatment works (STW). Stoke Bardolph STW is the main site for Nottingham, treating up to 360,000 megalitres/day of effluent using primary settlement followed by mechanical and diffused aeration. Designed and installed by Birtley Engineering of Chesterfield a division of Taylor Woodrow Construction, the site's sludge dewatering unit is a belt thickening system, comprising a 3x3m wide belt of 0.7mm mesh, located above a collection sump. A number of Industrial E Range pumps are used to transfer surplus activated sludge from the various aeration systems to the dewatering unit. The sludge, which at this stage has a dry solids content of up to 0.8%, is mixed with a polymer and passed over the mesh belt. Water drains into the collection sump, leaving dewatered sludge which now has a solids content of up to 6.0%. As the dewatered sludge reaches the end of the belt it is deposited into the inlet hopper of the Monoflo Widethroat W Range pump and transferred to holding tanks. This pump was chosen as it was the only system available with an inlet wider than the belt to prevent spillage. Ideal for thick non-flowing sludges and slurries, the W Range incorporates an auger system which helps to feed the sludge to the pumping element without bridging or blocking. Birtley Engineering specified progressing cavity pumps due to their ability to handle materials with viscosities as high as 1,000,000 cP. Monoflo was chosen as it was able to meet Birtley's request for adjustable stators which would allow re-tensioning of the rotor/stator arrangement to prolong the service life of the pumping elements. Other key deciding factors behind the choice of Monoflo were technical competance combined with competitive pricing and a comprehensive back-up service. Both the E and W Range pumps have a simple design for ease of service and maintenance, and are modularly constructed with many inter-changeable components, thus reducing the stocks of service spares which need to be carried by Severn Trent. Monoflo's Industrial E Range comprises single, two, four, six, eight and twelve stage pumps, capable of accommodating capacities up to 1849 gpm and pressures up to 1044 psi. Available as both close coupled or as a bareshaft pump, the Widethroat W Range has the option of an integral bridge breaker and varying hopper sizes to suit a variety of applications. When fitted with the integral bridge breaker, this pump will handle product with a dry solids content approaching 40%.
