Meeting the challenge
of waste treatment
At Spirax Sarco, we understand that water utility
companies are under pressure to use more effective
processes to treat sewage and wastewater.
Landfill legislation from Europe and the National Waste
Strategy for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern
Ireland means that water utility companies must reduce
the amount of organic waste going to landfill. At the same
time, climate change legislation is encouraging them not
only to reduce their energy consumption, but also to offset
costs by selling electricity back to the National Grid at a
premium with the support of Renewables Obligation
Certificates.
Anaerobic digestion is an established process to break
down waste streams and generate biogas, but produces
sludge that must go to landfill. Advanced anaerobic
digestion using steam heating, however, boosts
productivity and removes pathogens and nitrates, resulting
in sludge suitable for arable land.
Better still, combining advanced anaerobic digestion
with thermal hydrolysis pretreatment and combined heat
and power generation raises the efficiency and costeffectiveness
of the treatment process to new levels.
The benefits of combining steam-driven
thermal hydrolysis and advanced anaerobic
digestion:
• Convert up to 65% of the organic matter
in sludge into biogas
• The post-digestion sludge can contain
up to 40% dry solids, making materials
handling and transport easier
• Kill pathogens with heat treatment
• Eliminate unwanted odours
• Improve energy efficiency
• Increase digestor capacity by 2-3 times

Our purpose-built training centre in Cheltenham
features fully equipped, air-conditioned lecture rooms,
a practical demonstration area with numerous
demonstration rigs providing hands-on fault finding
and assembly exercises. It also benefits from its own
fully operational boiler house equipped with
compressor plant and full condensate return system.
We are an ISO9001: 2008 accredited company, with
experienced project management skills. As part of our
after sales support we can provide a unique selection
of tailored onsite and off-site training packages.
These can include design of steam systems, Boiler
Operation Accreditation Scheme (BOAS) and
maintenance of steam systems, which are all nationally
accredited by BTEC, CIBSE and the CEA.

Anglian Water gets the Spirax Sarco treatment
Steam and hot water systems from Spirax Sarco are helping Anglian Water treat sewage sludge at two new biosolids
treatment works in Kings Lynn and Great Billing. The projects are two of four ground breaking schemes planned by
the utility company to reduce biosolids volumes, increase quality and generate energy in the process. This innovative
process will not only make the centres self-sufficient but will annually export up to 1 MW back to the National Grid.
Spirax Sarco expertise was brought in to provide consultancy on the specification, design and installation of the
steam systems for both sites. An array of Spirax Sarco specialists in condensate recovery, steam trapping and water
treatment worked in partnership with the projects’ contractors, Imtech, to design an easily maintainable system with
minimal downtime.
“We didn’t have a great deal of experience with steam systems,” says Imtech Process Engineer Adrian Jaques. “So
we contacted Spirax Sarco and designed the scheme together with them. They were knowledgeable, good to work
with and very helpful throughout the projects. In fact I can’t praise them enough.”
