New Biogas Technology
Case Study

The Opportunity
Biogas, a clean and renewable
form of energy, could very
well provide a substitute for
conventional fossil fuel sources
of energy, such as oil or coal,
which are causing ecological and
environmental problems. At the
same time, the traditional fossil
fuel sources relied on in the past
are depleting.
In the past, farms typically
disposed of most animal manure
in an open pond or they stored
the waste outdoors to decompose.
Consequently, the animal manure
emits methane and ammonia as
it decomposes, which are both
widely recognized as destructive
greenhouse gases (GHG).

The Solution
Anaerobic digestion is a well-established process for treating many types
of organic waste and converts manure to methane-rich biogas; thus, we
can significantly lower GHG emissions from manure.
For instance, in electricity generation using biogas instead of coal, the
biogas results in the reduction of two GHG sources: the first reduction
occurs through the usage of the gasses produced by the decomposing
manure; the second reduction comes from replacing the coal with a less
carbon-intensive source in biogas.
Dresser-Rand contributed to this project by installing its Guascor®
SFGM560 generating set without a nitrogen removal system.
This new technology uses waste chicken manure to provide 19,500 kw of
energy per day.
Converting livestock manure into a renewable fuel source like biogas
helps reduce GHG emissions and helps meet renewable energy
requirements.
It also represents a valuable starting point for mitigating agricultural
contributions to global climate change.

The ASN PHATTANA chicken
egg farm, located in Nakornayok,
Thailand, creates approx. 21,900
tons of chicken manure per year
which then produces 130 m3
biogas / ton of chicken manure.
